A Student-Developed Smart Attendance System Will Soon Replace The Manual Method

A STUDENT DEVELOPED SMART ATTENDANCE SYSTEM WILL SOON REPLACE THE MANUAL METHOD

The use of papers to record students’ attendance to the class is now considered to be irrelevant and a thing of the past.  Hence, to compete with current technological developments, a final year student, Ms. Nurul Husna Mohd Fauzi developed a system called Smart Attendance System to replace the manual method.

The student of the Bachelor of Science (Information Technology) programme said the system utilized the facial recognition technique.  Hence, every time students attended classes they no longer needed to use paper to indicate their attendance as they currently do in UUM.

According to her, the method not only avoided fraudulent attendance but also indirectly assisted in the saving paper usage and maintaining the environment.

"The system is still under construction and is expected to be adopted in the near future as facial recognition is an important step in improving and facilitating the detection of student attendance into the classroom.

"To develop this prototype is not easy and it is a challenging task as this system focuses on face recognition technique for every student involved," she said.

The Smart Attendance System project is under the supervision of Dr. Noradila Nordin of the School of Computing (SoC).

Dr. Noradila said the Smart Attendance System allowed students to view or track their attendance to class using web-based applications.

Students said they could use their cell phones to locate the location and timestamp, and then use the mobile phone camera to record their faces which will be used to compare the student's pictures in the database to get the same picture.

"If a similar picture is found, the student will be marked as present in the class.

"Nurul Husna has shown interest in continuing this project which will include security aspects of web-based applications, a wide range of facial precision in algorithm recognition and ensure that web-based applications are available for use," she said.

Smart Attendance System won the silver medal at the Innovative Research, Invention and Application (I-RIA) 2019 Exhibition which took place at Dewan Mu'adzam Shah recently.
