Public University Golf Tournament Unifies Golf Athletes From Various Backgrounds
The 47th Public University Golf Tournament (2019) which ended last Sunday witnessed the unification of athletes from various backgrounds participating in the two-day event.
UUM Vice-Chancellor, Prof Dato' Dr Ahmad Bashawir Abdul Ghani said organising the Public University Golf Tournament provided valuable experience to the players and it also further enhanced the performance in the golfing sports amongst members of staff of the various public universities globally.
According to him, golfing requires skill, a high degree of discipline, patience, staying present skill and wise decision making, but more importantly, the spirit of sportsmanship, credibility and cooperation among the participating athletes regardless of age, race, rank and religion.
He said that through sports, members of staff of public universities can maintain optimum health, whilst helping to build mental strengths such as controlling emotions, staying focused, developing strategies and building team spirit.
“In developing the golf sports both locally and internationally, a National Golf Academy has been established by the Ministry of Education Malaysia and UUM has been entrusted to manage it.
"At present, the total number of students pursuing their studies under this academy programme is 60 and each of these students have the handicap of less than 10. In addition, five students and former students of the academy have become professionals," he said at the 47th Public University Golf Tournament Dinner and Prize Giving ceremony held at the EDC Hotels & Resorts recently.
He also expressed his delight that UUM golf course was one of the best in Malaysia based on favourable feedbacks from players.
At the event, the Vice-Chancellor also announced surprise prizes in the form of return flight tickets sponsored by Qatar Airways. The first return flight ticket went to a golf athlete from UiTM who will be flown to Doha while the champion of the Individual Gross category went to a fellow golfer from UPSI. He received flight ticket that will fly him to any destinations in Europe.
Overall, University of Technology MARA (UiTM) emerged as the champion of the 47th Public University Golf Tournament, 2019 and in one fell swoop will host next year's golf tournament.
The Prize Giving ceremony was officiated by His Royal Highness Tengku Sarafudin Badlishah Ibni Al Aminul Karim Sultan Sallehuddin, the Raja Muda of Kedah Darul Aman cum the Pro-Chancellor of UUM.
Also present at the ceremony was the Member of the Kedah State Executive Council who is also the Kedah Youth and Sports, Tourism, Arts and Culture and Entrepreneur Development committee chairman, Mr. Mohd Asmirul Anuar Aris who represented the Menteri Besar of Kedah.
Meanwhile, UUM team also did the University proud when it emerged on top of the Individual Invitation category in the first and second places, while the Team Invitation category, they came in first and the Individual VIP and Team VIP categories in second place respectively.
A total of 294 golfers from public universities across the country participated in the tournament and UUM sent 24 players comprising UUM staff and VIPs and invited guests to attend the two-day tournament on 7 and 8 September at three separate venues namely UUM Golf and Recreation Club, Darulaman Golf and Country Club, Jitra and Cinta Sayang Golf Club, Sungai Petani.
In total six (6) categories were contested namely Individual Gross category, Team Gross, Individual Nett, Team Nett, Individual VIP and Team VIP as well as invited guests.
