Schools Urged To Assist The University In Developing The State Of Kedah With Their Respective Expertise
During a goodwill visit to the School of Technology Management and Logistics (STML), Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Ahmad Bashawir Abdul Ghani emphasised that all schools should focus on assisting the university to develop the state of Kedah.
He said UUM should assist the Kedah state government in its effort to develop the state to be more developed and competitive. This could be done by transferring all the expertise that UUM possess to the public.
"UUM has a lot of human resources but it still lacks in human capital. We do not own talents that can be discovered though there are many staff here.
"I want the expertise that we possess be channelled to the local community and I want STML to focus on community programmes in Kulim because this school has been requested to help this district in conjunction with 1 Faculty 1 District programme with the aim of reaching out to the local community because without society, there would be no university," he said at the STML Meeting Room recently.
In addition, he also urged the related members of staff at STML to speed up the process of setting up the double degree programmes with the University of Hull, United Kingdom as a contribution to the Malaysian government.
At the same time, the Vice-Chancellor expressed the university's aspiration to assist lecturers or academicians who would like to collaborate with Japan and China to enable them to study the sophisticated technological fields of the two countries.
"The lecturer is given the choice of either pursuing PhD studies at Japanese or Chinese universities as these two countries are known to have the greatest in technology.
"The university is ready to help so that not only academicians gain benefits, but the university and the nation too stand to gain the advantages of the collaboration with either one of those countries," said him who also extended his gratitude and appreciation to fellow academicians at STML for helping the university to provide labour to other departments.
Apart from its achievements, STML had always been within the top three achievers in the KPI ranking.
Meanwhile, at a meeting held at the Centre for International Affairs and Cooperation (CIAC), Prof Dr Ahmad Bashawir suggested that the CIAC come up with a marketing strategy and play a more effective role in attracting more international collaboration especially with China, Indonesia and Pakistan to cooperate with UUM on the international level.
Additionally, he also urged those at CIAC to work more efficiently and to embrace new work culture, apart from having a more orderly management process, especially concerning matters that involve visas of international student in the hope of reducing frequent visa issues.
In addition, suggestions were also made on the need for CIAC to come up with its own KPI to cover the aspects of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) at international level, promotion and admission of international students to UUM.
