Students Explore Career Pathways At UUM Career Fair 2019
Members of the public especially those still seeking employment and venues to have their practicum trainings thronged the two-day UUM Career Fair 2019 which began on 3 March at the Foyer of the Sultanah Bahiyah Library.
Director of Career Development Centre (CDC), Dr. Awan Ismail said 24 companies participated in the CDC Career Fair which ended yesterday.
Among the companies which set up booths were Malayan Banking Berhad (MAYBANK), Air Asia Global Shared Services Sdn Bhd (Air Asia), Huawei Technologies (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, OCBC Bank (M) Berhad and Tenaga Nasional Berhad.
"The response we received this time around has been overwhelming. Imagine within three hours of opening our doors, we received over 1,500 visitors, apart from receiving participation including those from conglomerate, campus community and outsiders," she said.
According to her, the programme also provided a platform for interaction to take place with multinational companies in hopes of setting up networking as well as promoting UUM to the public as the University in a Green Forest.
"We are deeply honoured when big companies are willing to take in our students for practicum training and work for their companies in view of the fact that our students are good at multitasking and possess good skillset," she further added.
She further reiterated that the programme also successfully attracted students from other Higher Education Institutions in the northern zone, apart from UUM students who were looking for jobs and places for practicum training.
"This programme provides exposure and information to students about job opportunities and open interviews conducted by companies involved.
"I fervently hope that the cooperation we have with the multinational companies we have here today will continue and UUM students will continue to be given the opportunity not only to undergo practicum but also be entrusted to become permanent staff in the organization," she said.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hendrik Lamsali who was in attendance also presented certificate of appreciation to the respective companies that took part in the UUM Career Fair 2019.
Meanwhile, Bachelor of Muamalat Administration student, Ms. Nur Aimi Che Man, 24, said the programme proved to be very useful especially for final semester students like her, as it enabled her to look for the most suitable company for her practicum training and submit a resume to the related company.
According to her, with the walk-in resume booth, she received the right advice and was no longer worried about filling in the information in the resume.
"From there, I learned a lot about the ins and outs of the career and Career Fair is definitely the place I choose to go to because I can get acquainted with the companies involved apart from being exposed to the working world.
鈥淚 have learnt something new that is, how I need to communicate with companies out there and also train myself to be confident when I come face to face with people out there,鈥 she said.
She further added that the programme benefitted visitors especially UUM students in terms of enlightened them on the various careers and career paths offered by the companies.
"I used to be terrible at self-management but since becoming a CDC volunteer, I have become increasingly aggressive and able to work more efficiently and effectively," said Nur Aimi who became a Career Fair volunteer since her second semester.
Among the other interesting events which took place throughout the two-day fair were Graduate Employability Enhancement Series, Maybank Go Ahead Challenge, Resume Review, Career Personality Test, Interview, Vote, Share & Win, Kahoot Explorace, Public lecture, Career Talk, and Snap & Win.
Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), Kolej Universiti Islam Perlis (KUIPs), Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Arau and UiTM Permatang Pauh also joined in the fun at the Career Fair.
