UUM ONLINE: Langkawi - In line with University Utara Malaysia's (UUM) aspiration of establishing a Centre for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) studies, the STEM Central Committee headed by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Ahmad Bashawir Abdul Ghani paid a visit to Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) Operations Centre.

He said the visit was aimed at facilitating the committee in obtaining guidance and knowledge in formulating the development plan of the UUM Centre for STEM Studies.

During the visit the Vice-Chancellor was enthralled by the facilities and 5G capabilities available at TM Langkawi after surveying and being taken on a tour at the TM 5G Telecommunication Tower at Cenang Beach and the TM headquarters there.

"After witnessing the sophistication of the technology developed, UUM will cooperate with TM as an industry partner in planning and developing the UUM Centre for STEM studies, research in areas related to 5G technology and as a venue for UUM students to undergo industrial training," he said.

The UUM delegation was welcomed by the General Manager of TM Kedah / Perlis, Mr Anis Ahmad Mohd Ibrahim together with senior TM officials.

During the visit, the UUM delegation was briefed by Mr Anis Ahmad on the 5G Demonstration Project (5GDP) developed by TM on Langkawi Island with the full support of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

According to him, Langkawi Island became the first archipelago to be equipped with a smart city system powered by a fifth generation or 5G telecommunications network through the said project.

Then, the Vice-Chancellor and the UUM delegation were also taken to the 5G Control Centre (5GCC) which is the monitoring hub of the entire resort island ranging from smart traffic control to high resolution surveillance cameras that provide video in real time.

In addition, the delegation was also briefed on STEM education by the industry as well as the potential for cooperation between TM and UUM.
