The inauguration of the new UHWC annexe building was officiated by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato' Dr Mohd Foad Sakdan, on Thursday afternoon.

Dr. Mohd Foad stated that the government has prioritised projects that improve health and welfare services since the world was hit by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

According to him, an application was made under the 12th Malaysia Plan (RMK-12) RP2 2022, resulting in an allocation of RM1.7 million to upgrade the emergency room, medical store, and sanitation store at UHWC.

He said that the upgrade work included increasing the number of beds in the emergency room from 3 to 9 units.

"In addition, the medical store and sanitary store underwent expansion to cater to the demands during the pandemic, bringing the total area of the UUM UHWC building to 4,203 square metres.

"The upgrade work commenced on 29 November 2022 and was completed on 23 May 2024, spanning a construction period of 78 weeks,鈥 he said.

He added that the original UHWC building was completed and operational alongside the main UUM campus in 1991, covered an area of 1,235 square metres and served the needs of 10,000 students at the time. Given the current student population of 30,000, UUM applied to upgrade the existing UHWC building under the 9th Malaysia Plan.

The additional building, costing RM3,878,788, was fully completed on 7 March 2010, adding 2,823 square metres and remains in operation today.

Dr. Mohd Foad highlighted that UHWC offers a range of services including medical, dental, accident and emergency treatment, pharmacy, laboratory, X-Ray, and environmental health. The centre treats over 300 patients daily, comprising students, staff, their dependents, and members of the public.

"Congratulations and well done to UHWC for its successful expansion of its services to both UUM denizens and the wider community by enhancing the existing facilities," he said, while witnessing the handover of the Annexe Building Key from the Director of the Infrastructure Development and Management Department, Mdm. Lar. Noraini Abu Seman, to the Director of UHWC, Dr Adi Azhar Abdul Razak.

The event also featured the launch of the university emergency number 4444.

Also in attendance at the event were the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Prof. Dr Ahmad Martadha Mohamed; Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Prof. Dr Russayani Ismail, and members of the University Management Committee.
