A student from the School of International Studies, Ms. Rishalini A / P Krishnan emerged victorious at the 18th Chinese Bridge Chinese Proficiency Competition for Malaysia Region 2019 jointly organized by the Kong Zi Institute, University of Malaya and the Embassy of the People's Republic of China recently.

The student of the Bachelor of International Business Management Programme defeated 30 other participants from 13 universities. The competition was held at the Kong Zi Institute, University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur.

Ms. Rishalini will represent Malaysia in the Chinese Bridge Competition for the quarter-finals and final rounds scheduled to be held in July in Hunan, China.

Besides Rishalini, three other students will also represent UUM in the competition namely Ms. Nurul Syazwani Mohd Khairi who obtained the honours prize, while Ms. Farah Nur Najwa Muhammad Azhar and Ms. Rozlyani Ruslan, each received the consolation prize.

The Chinese Bridge competition is open to participants who are non-Chinese speakers and the competition is divided into three categories namely short lecture (30 percent), question and answer session (20 percent) and performance (50 percent).

Meanwhile, the Dean of SLCP, Prof. Dr. Shukri Ahmad said the four students were sent to participate in the competition so as to provide them with the opportunity to gain valuable experience. Presenting in front of the audience will indeed raise the students’ level of self-confidence.

He further reiterated that, the competition will also encourage students to speak Mandarin as the language has become increasingly important today.

"I am extremely delighted with this achievement and I fervently hope that the students who are representing UUM will elevate Malaysia and UUM brand abroad," he said.
