UUM ONLINE: As a university that aspires to become the Eminent Management University, UUM is always conscious of the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in preparing 21st century graduates for the global society.

This educational concept espouses the importance of four critical components of communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking (4 Cs) which should be integrated with the high-level thinking skills (HOTS) concept in the learning process.

To this end, the University welcomes the decree by His Royal Highness the Chancellor, the Sultan of Kedah, Al-Aminul Karim Sultan Sallehuddin ibni Almarhum Sultan Badlishah that UUM should establish a centre dedicated to the learning of STEM.

The main aim of the centre is to help disseminate related knowledge in the said field at grassroots levels all over Kedah. His Royal Highness made the remark at the opening ceremony of the first meeting of the third session of the 14th Kedah State Legislative Assembly at the Wisma Darul Aman.

Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Ahmad Bashawir Abdul Ghani said, UUM has a pool of established expertise in areas such as decision science, information technology, management technology, media technology and business mathematics which are of relevance. In realising His Royal Highness the Chancellor’s decree, the University will undertake due diligence in earnest and engage its main stakeholders, particularly the Ministry of Higher Education, on the proposal to establish the said centre.

To date, various programmes have been implemented successfully on campus and the surrounding communities in promoting STEM culture such as the organization of the STEM Camp. The main aim was to give exposure and educate the public about this concept and to emphasize the importance of applying STEM in our daily lives.

These noble efforts are continuing and recently, a senior academician from the Faculty of Quantitative Science (SQS), Dr. Masnita bint Misiran @ Bakun, was appointed as the My STEM Ambassador by the Higher Education Department.

The decree by His Royal Highness the Chancellor is both timely and augurs well with the University’s quest to become a digital campus. With well-equipped IT infrastructures and info structures, the University can better support the Kedah State Government's efforts to further develop Bukit Kayu Hitam area into a Special Border Economic Zone (SBEZ).

To this end, UUM has collaborated with PKT Logistics Group Sdn. Bhd. in establishing an Institute of Logistics in the vicinity of the SBEZ. Looking forward, in anticipation of the State Government’s long term economic plan in building the Kulim International Airport (KXP), the future STEM trained graduates produced by the University will definitely benefit from this high impact project and be the catalyst for the wider use of technology in the state.

Indeed, His Highness the Sultan of Kedah farsightedness and vision will accelerate efforts to increase the State of Kedah's per capita income as the culture incorporated in STEM bodes well with the effort to create a resilient and knowledgeable generation that will not only include technology users, but also technology innovators.
